Visible Mending: Japanese Boro Stitching

Join Miranda for a visible mending workshop exploring Boro, a Japanese technique that uses simple hand-stitches to repair and celebrate well-loved textiles. Bring a piece of denim clothing or denim cloth from home, and give it a new chapter through stitch.

During this 2 hour workshop, you'll receive a Sashiko needle, 25m of 100% cotton Sashiko thread, and a curated selection of denim and linen patches to practice on and incorporate into your piece. You'll learn traditional Boro hand-stitching and start mending your own garment — no need to finish on the spot, you're welcome to take your work home to keep going. A postcard stitch guide is included to keep the technique alive after class.

Cost: $55 per participant

✨ Each participant will take home their in-progress mended piece, their Sashiko kit, and a stitch guide postcard to continue the practice.

Additional Notes:

• This workshop is only available for those 17yrs+
• This venue is wheelchair accessible. However, the bathroom is not. There are public wheelchair accessible bathrooms available elsewhere on Granville Island — if you have any questions or concerns about accessibility, please feel free to reach out.
• This is a hands-on workshop involving hand-stitching with a sewing needle, so manual dexterity is required. Message us for questions about individual accessibility needs.

With a professional background in creative direction and visual storytelling for architecture and design clients, Miranda brings a thoughtful eye for composition, colour, and texture to everything she creates. Whether she’s behind the camera, making candles, writing, or stitching, her work celebrates beauty, sustainability, and the imperfect charm of handmade things.

In this workshop, she’ll introduce participants to the Japanese tradition of boro and visible mending, encouraging them to embrace repair as both a practical skill and a creative expression. No experience is necessary—just curiosity and a willingness to give treasured textiles a new chapter.
