Phoenix Laurén (Vancouver, BC)
Phoenix Laurén has been on my radar since I first saw photos of her a few years ago shot by Vancouver photographer Isaac Sim. The photos were stunning and mysterious and I immediately wanted to know more about this songstress. Fast forward to this past summer when we finally had the chance to meet and as luck would have it Isaac and Phoenix Laurén had been talking about shooting together again. I feel so lucky to be able to feature this shoot on the 3rd year anniversary of Style Stories! I asked Singer/Songwritter Phoenix Laurén to tell me about where she grew up and what she is doing now, read on to find out more about this Canadian talent...
"I was born in Penticton, BC - and lived in BC until I was about 10 years old, where my family made the massive move to Saskatchewan. It was a crazy transition, and something that took a while to get used to…BUT! As much as people tease Saskatchewan - it's an awesome place to grow up. The community in Saskatoon, and the people, are unlike anywhere else I've ever experienced. Having said that however, Vancouver is where I want to be right now. I've made it home, and BC has and always will have a huge place in my heart.
Music has always been my greatest passion. I can't remember a time when I wasn't singing. It all started by singing "specials" in church, then school performances, to moving into singing competitions, and finally building my first band and writing and performing originals. However, the trickiest part (at least for me) has been to truly find my "own sound" - staying true to the music I really love. It's been a long challenging journey of learning how to properly communicate my vision, and the kind of music I want to produce, as well as the kind of artist I want to be. I've had many road bumps along the way, which was difficult but also gave me the opportunity to work harder at what I wanted, and where I wanted to be. Finally, I am at this place where I am happy with what I am creating. I feel like I am able to be happy not because I feel I'm awesome, but rather that I am creating from a place that is genuine - and I'm finally writing the type of music I actually listen to. I'm working with a producer who is a great friend out of LA, and it's exciting because we are a great musical fit. I don't have to "work hard" to communicate my vision to him, rather, we just seem to be on the same page. A very refreshing change from what I've been used to!"

What are you working on currently?
I'm just finishing up my first solo EP. I'm extremely excited to be able to release something that I've poured my heart and soul into! It's set to be released at the beginning of 2017. So keep an eye out for that new new coming up soon! :)
Also I've been contemplating the idea of starting an online vintage shop. Besides music, fashion, and particularly vintage and pre-loved items are a really big obsession of mine. So there are some things in the works :)
Who are some of your all-time fave musicians?
The list could probably go on forever, but the main ones…. Lauryn Hill, Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, and on and on and on it goes! But currently cannot get enough of the song "Focus" by H.E.R. Also "Distraction" by Kehlani.
Do you have a dream city you would love to move to and live in and why?
A dream city to live in would be San Francisco for sure. I'd have to say it's my favourite city I've ever been to. I use to live in northern California so I would frequent SF as much as possible. The architecture, the fashion, the food - I love it all!
Fave places to chill in the city?
I'm definitely a home body, so I would be lying if I didn't say my house ha! But I also love being able to just walk around this beautiful city and vintage shop. I don't think anything is as therapeutic for me than wondering around to find hidden gems. It may be a slight problem ;) As far as actual establishments go, I really like Los Cuervos and the Shameful Tiki!
Everything in fashion comes around again…is there a trend that went out of style that you are excited to see come back into fashion?
There is a lot "in" right now that has definitely come back around. I've always been into 90's vibes. But I think velvet is on it's way back in a bigger and more prominent way - and I am totally down!
Do you have a style icon? Who/what inspires you?
I don't think I have a single style icon to be honest. There are a number of people that obviously have amazing style, so the internet and social media is a great place to glean from. However, I have honestly just always worn what I liked, what's true to me. I don't put limits or rules on fashion or style - it should be ever changing, evolving, and growing. That is part of the reason we look back at ourselves and think, "I actually use to wear that?!" But despite how embarrassing old pictures can sometimes be I think it's very cool to see how we each change.
