Vancity Tribe (Vancouver, BC)

“I didn't think I'd pursue the fashion/makeup industry. This is not what I had planned. “

Christine Taylor Wong founder of Vancity Tribe was an unexpected surprise to myStyle Story feature in the best kind of way.  I spotted her through social media photos and loved the sleekness of her styling, it was always simple but badass, exactly what I try to convey in my line Wild & Free.  I invited Christine to tell me more about why she started her website www.vancitytribe.com and was blown away by her openness about her life story and what lead her to start the site.  Struggling through a history of family depression, major highs and all-time lows, drugs and dropping out of school, it might surprise some people of Christine’s successes.

“Throughout high school I raised & saved up money to go to Tanzania, Africa.  After submitting an application and a bunch of essays to an American Organization, I was accepted as the only Canadian Representative. I was on the plane on my 17th birthday, and as soon as I touched ground I had never felt so content in my life. I taught English at a primary school in Moshi and helped paint old classrooms. I played lots of soccer with the kids, and hung out at the local orphanage... I didn't want to return home.

I got my G.E.D in adult school. And applied to Langara College for Peace & Conflict Studies. I had a dream of becoming a UN Peace Keeper.  I had it all planned out. Langara for 2 years - transfer to SFU or UBC for International Relations, and by 4th year you can apply for an internship at the UN in any of the countries. Then I'd apply for a job after.  This is still a dream.”

Although I have not included all of what Christine shared with me I feel like I can tell you that she is a thought provoking amazing woman figuring out who she is one day at a time.  She has an internal struggle about her future that is so passionate that I have no doubt this will lead her into a life roll that she hasn’t even imagined for herself yet.  Young, driven and now using a platform to tell the stories of her peers, Vancity Tribe is a website that I will be following regularly.

A big thank you to Melissa Wong Photography for photographing Christine.  Thank you for your beautiful photos (I'm looking forward to working with Melissa again for my March Style Story!)

Special thank you to Ashley Krastel for Christine's Makeup.

Tell us more about Vancity Tribe… I created Vancity Tribe to show off all my cool buds. I had been street scouted around Vancouver a few times, and every time they would only ask for my photo while my friend would just stand awkwardly on the side. I thought that was bullshit because all my friends deserve to be shown off and featured too. They all have really cool hobbies and aspirations and a unique style of their own. So I decided to do "Spotlights" where I showcased my friends promoting their brands, talents and personal style. It got so much positive feedback that I had people I didn't know emailing me asking to be spotlighted. That was cool. Why “Vancity Tribe”? I was studying for my Anthropology class (while still enrolled at Langara). I wanted to call my blog "Anthropology" because it's the study of people and cultures, but there's already a store with that name. So I tried brainstorming other names that were related to people, culture and life. Thus Vancity "TRIBE" was born.

What do you see in the future for Vancity Tribe?

No idea where it's going. I'm throwing a 1 year anniversary party on February 22nd. Come celebrate!
Like mentioned before, I had no idea Tribe was going to be successful or liked at all. Tribe will always be around as a place to post all the neat projects and collaborations I do. I think it will always be evolving for the better.

What can we look forward to on your site?

A Spotlight on "Plaaastic”, a blogger in Singapore.  We have a similar story, we felt the same kind of emotions and we had unfortunate event after unfortunate event happen. We both love volunteering, traveling and doing community service. We both believe that helping others makes a difference and can help make someone’s day, which in the end makes us feel happy.

Why were you drawn to the Jewelry that you chose for the shoot?

I'm not even sure. I loved every piece on your site... It wasn't hard to chose though --my eyes were just drawn to the ones I picked out. I like minimal, gold jewelry... and crystals... I'm very bland I think. I don't like bright, happy colours. My favourite colour is black.
I've been wearing the crystal quartz necklace every day since that shoot... and the fishtail bracelet as well. LOVE IT.

And to that I say – I love it on you!!  Thank you so much for sharing your life with me Christine, I am amazed at your accomplishments, you are young vibrant and full of passion and I am excited to see what you do with your future!
