A Dash of Dior (Vancouver, BC)

“A successful person is a dreamer who believed in themselves”  (unknown source)

Like myself, Jen Giles fashion blogger behind A Dash of Dior was born and raised in the Lower Mainland of Vancouver and loves to call it home. With the ocean and mountains surrounding her Jen found inspiration and courage to turn her hobby of photography into a business this year and I’m especially excited to celebrate this month’s Style Story with Jen as my featured blogger as I'm celebrating my 1 Year Anniversary of the series! Doing what you love and taking a chance to explore your creative ideas takes a lot of hard work and perserverance (and yes it can be a lot of rewarding fun too!).  In the end you have to trust yourself and just try it because no one else will try for you.

“This past year I decided to focus more on photography, something I’ve always loved that had previously just been a hobby, and decided to take a leap of faith to launch my own photography business, Blush Sky Photography. My focus is mainly engagements and weddings and I’m thankful to have already met some amazing people through my business. Launching a new business while working fulltime and running a blog is no easy feat but it’s been so rewarding working on something I love!

I’ve met some amazing people through my blog that I would have otherwise never met; I have friends across the US who I talk to regularly and I love that we have so many things in common, other than just a love for fashion! My closest blogger friend lives in Chicago (www.charminglystyled.com), I love that our fashion blogs brought us together and cherish that it’s grown into an awesome friendship. She’s actually coming for a visit next week!”

This 1 Year Anniversary of my Style Stories series could not have been celebrated without photographer Kim James being behind the lens!  I met Kim a few years ago through social media and have gotten to know and love her and her work.  This year Jen and Kim also grew a working relationship and passion of photography into an amazing friendship.  I love that we were able to collaborate on this beautiful Fall shoot and I can’t wait to see where the year takes us! Big thank you to Kim and Jen for making this one year anniversary so fabulous for me, the photos are stunning (and can I just comment on Jen's heels for a moment...love them!).  Looking forward to the next year of stories! xo

How did your blog start and what do you love about blogging?

My background is very science based; I have a Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Kinesiology and currently work in physiotherapy.  I spent countless hours during my undergrad studying chemistry, physics and biomechanics (and yes, they’re just as boring as they sound) when I suddenly realized my day-to-day life was seriously lacking creativity. Science and math are very black and white, there’s no opportunity for creativity and I felt as though that part of me was slowly disappearing. I’ve been in love with fashion for as long as I can remember and I’d been following some popular fashion bloggers for a while when I had the idea to create my own. So in the spring of 2012, A Dash of Dior was born as a creative outlet and slowly began to grow.

I love all the bold colours you wear in your blog posts, is there a colour this winter that you think everyone should try?

My favorite color combo for winter is perfectly represented by my outfit above, black & gold. It’s classy and timeless with a hint of metallic, which I love!  When winter arrives, I find my wardrobe shifts to black and shades of grey; there’s something so effortless and chic about a woman in all black. Although black is my go to winter color, I’m loving burgundy and oxblood. It’s taken me a long time to warm up to those shades; they’re not colors I would gravitate towards in the past due to the color of my hair, however I recently wore a beautiful burgundy lace dress in a friend’s wedding and have since been smitten with the shade!

What is your favorite go-to outfit right now for Fall?

My favorite fall outfit at the moment is a black moto jacket, black cigarette pants, leather booties and an oversized grey scarf. Oversized scarves are my favorite fall accessory, I love how cozy they are and how they perfectly complete any outfit.

What are you hoping to add to your closet this Winter?

I’ve been searching for the perfect pair of leather pants for quite some time. There are so many gorgeous options however it’s difficult to find the perfect fit when you’re tall (I’m 5’10”) and have very long legs, but I’m confident the right pair is out there!

How does your feminine touch carry over into your home décor? Any store in particular that you would recommend people to check out?

I truly love everything pretty and delicate with a hint of glam, which definitely carries over into the décor of our apartment. I love shades of white and cream, which are the colors that I’ve decorated our home. The only space that has a slight deviation from that color palette is our home office, which is decorated in shades of blush pink and mint; they’re my two favorite colors and also the inspiration behind the name of my photography business. I’m thankful my husband is laid back and doesn’t mind our shared office being decorated with shades of pink.

The newest addition to our home is a gold étagère; the gold adds a hint of glam and the glass shelves are beautiful for displaying a few of my favorite items. Vancouver is home to so many amazing home décor stores but one of my favorites has to be The Cross Design in Yaletown! It’s definitely not a secret spot as it’s wildly popular amongst bloggers and locals alike and has without a doubt the prettiest Instagram account! I love The Cross because it blends perfectly with the esthetic of our home and it’s a wonderful source of inspiration!

Why were you drawn to the Sarah Mulder Jewelry pieces that you chose for this outfit?

I absolutely love every piece from the Adore Collection! I love the organic feel of both the leaf bracelet and earrings, being Fall with the leaves changing color they were the perfect choice. Both necklaces have a classic vibe; they’re beautiful and eye catching while still being understated. I love them styled together they complement each other perfectly.
