"As soon as I could hold a crayon in my hand I don't think there was anything else for me," says artist/jewelry designer (sarahmulder.com) and proud Vancouverite, Sarah Mulder.
At the age of 12, she drew cartoon characters on her bedroom wall. Fellow students were always asking to have her draw their portrait. "I took my sketch pad everywhere, I would draw anything and everything," Mulder says.
After graduating from Langara College, she studied art history in Europe. This inspired her to continue her art studies at Emily Carr University.
Mulder started designing jewelry in her teens, which she sold at local markets. Nowadays, people are so impressed by her stunning creations that they offer to buy the ones that she is wearing. "I've redesigned one piece five times," she says.
Currently, the collection is available to purchase online. One of the special moments in her career was finding representation for her floral series. "I was thrilled when I signed with Canadian Art Prints and Winn Devon Art Group Inc. My goal is to get more commission work for my Cityscape collection, my sewn painting series."
Mulder gets the greatest satisfaction when "people are touched in some way by my work. I've always felt that art was in my soul, I'm excited about what the future holds."
Mulder invited Celebrity Spaces into her home.
Q: How would you describe your home in two words?
A: Bright and cozy.
Q: Tell us about your home.
A: My home is a 900-square foot condo in Burnaby. It is 80s minimalist style. I moved in while my boyfriend was away one summer and redecorated. Luckily he likes my style. My favourite oasis is the outdoor pool. I'm always down there in the summer.
Q: What attracted you to this space?
A: We have a spectacular view overlooking Burnaby Lake and couldn't pass it up. The place needed a major face-lift and the challenge of a renovation was exciting.
Q: Who shares this home?
A: My boyfriend Matt and I.
Q: What is your favourite room and why?
A: Our spare room is where I design my jewelry line. Having a creative space that is just mine is really important to me -- making messes is part of my design process. I'm really lucky to live with someone who recognizes this and is willing to give up space for me.
Q: How would you describe your decorating style?
A: Contemporary and classic with a splash of colour. I love to be able to showcase my art. I swap out art all the time, so we keep the décor simple and let the art do the talking. Flowers bring life into a room so I have a bouquet of fresh flowers in the living room and bathroom. The walls throughout the space are painted beige and the floors are a pale wood laminate. There is a comfy couch and a plush, turquoise blue chair in the living room. Both are perfect for relaxing.
Q: What is your fondest memory in this home?
A: Evenings on the balcony where we are enjoying a glass of wine and Matt is playing guitar.
Q: What's the one item in this house you can't live without?
A: My needle nose pliers used everyday for making jewelery. Handmade is a beautiful thing! I have acquired a lot of pieces from friends and from art markets over the years and I covet them!
Q: Weekends at home, what are we most likely to find you doing?
A: We'll take a long neighbourhood walk, grab a latte, make a huge meal and then have a dance party in the living room.
Q: If your walls could talk, what would they say?
A: "Turn up the music it's getting a little quiet in here."
