Vancouver artist and Emily Carr University Graduate, Sarah Mulder, showcases paintings that explore patterning, nature and balance, referencing images of quiet landscapes and reflecting her relationship to art as therapy. Sarah’s paintings embody the influences of her personal photography, memories, and sketches to convey an extension of her own environment and thoughts. Her paintings, which incorporate acrylic paint, pencil, ink washes and tactile material, are vibrant and dramatic. Sarah’s sewn cityscapes have been evolving since 2005, as a local artist the sustainability and eco-friendly components of her practice have become increasingly important to her; “My project called Cityscapes is about building up surfaces to render imagined city skylines out of reclaimed canvas and other “throw-away” materials. By using smaller pieces of discarded fabric the cities come to life in a fun and intriguing way that really drives people to step in closer and enjoy my sewn process.” The Cityscapes series is innovative and whimsical while still contributing to the environmentally friendly movement. In 2011 Sarah’s sewn work has been focusing on the never-ending construction of city skylines in Vancouver, and her pieces will soon include historical city landmarks, well known Lower Mainland neighborhoods and references to Vancouver’s natural landscape. |
